Sanjay Jeram, a political scientist at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, said the Liberals’ flexible, big tent is nothing new. The history of the federal Liberals and Progressive Conservatives before 1993, he said, shows “a remarkable capacity to shift, expand and contract its ideological core in pursuit of the electoral center”.
