The Islamic Republic may have survived this round of war, but it is more fragile, poorer and more isolated than before. Its blockade of the Gulf of Hormuz was unexpectedly successful, but that does not change the fact that, overall, its negotiating position remains weak – why else, when threatened with extinction, did it agree to a ceasefire it had rejected just days before?
