Bengaluru: Second Convocation of Dr BR Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE), University Bengaluruwill be held on April 27, where the diplomas of the last two academic years will be awarded.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Vice Chancellor Prof Vishwanath said that Governor-Chancellor Thawarchand Gehlot will preside over the meeting.
Minister of Higher Education Dr MC Sudhakar would attend and former member of the Planning Commission of India Prof BL Mungekar would address the gathering.
Diplomas for the last two academic years will be awarded at the meeting. In these two groups, students would be awarded six gold medals, 17 degree certificates and 171 diplomas.
Gold medals will be awarded to Meghana B Prashid (5-year integrated MSc course, 2019–24), Parvathi J (female 2020–25), Gauri Agarwal (2-year M.Sc. Economics, batch 2022–24), Divya U (2023–25 batch Financial20, Nejyansha 2023–25), Shekhar (female 2023–2025), he said.
Introducing six new courses
The university is designed to become a leading economic institution in the country. However, to gain admission to undergraduate or postgraduate courses here, students must have studied economics along with mathematics. Since such courses are not available in the state, even though 60% seats are reserved for Karnataka students, admission has been difficult, he said.
Additionally, admissions are made only through the Common University Entrance Test conducted by the NTA, making entry for state students challenging.
Taking into account the needs of state students, six new courses will be introduced from the next academic year, focusing only on economics. They are a three-year BSc data analysis, a two-year MSc data analysis, a five-year MA Integrated Economics, a two-year MA Economics, MSc Development Economics and an MSc Public Policy.
The university has infrastructure for 1250 students. 250 students are currently studying. Since it is a residential university, if the number of students increases, the hostel facilities would be inadequate. The government has not provided the promised funds and permanent faculty appointments are yet to be made, said Prof Vishwanath.
