Judge John Roach Jr. released images of the murder weapon, the autopsy and surveillance video that showed Karmelo Anthony tripping and falling onto the bleachers as he ran away from the murder.
MCKINNEY, Texas (CN) – A Texas judge released chilling evidence Friday night in the aftermath of the manslaughter conviction of Karmelo Anthony in the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco High School reunion.
Collin County Judge John Roach Jr. released more than six gigabytes of evidence, including surveillance footage, 911 calls and photos of murder weaponautopsy and the defendant’s family.
Jurors deliberated for three hours last June 9 condemning Anthony19, of Frisco, after a two-week trial. They dismissed a lesser charge of manslaughter and, after two more hours of deliberation, sentenced him to 35 years in prison, refusing to reveal that the killing was the result of “sudden passion”.
Anthony has repeatedly maintained that he acted in self-defense when he stabbed Metcalf, 17, after being told to leave and ducked inside a Memorial High School tent during a rainy meeting on April 2, 2025. Anthony attended Centennial High School, which did not have a tent at the time of the shooting.
The upper grain surveillance footage From the track meet shows several people gathered under the Memorial tent before Anthony, wearing a gray hoodie, gets out and runs down a set of bleachers. He appears to stumble in the lower rows before getting up and running more than 45 meters to the end of the stands, then continuing into a parking lot. Several people are seen following him and pointing at him until he is approached by a police officer.
The officer’s body camera footage was also released. It shows her handcuffing Anthony as she tells dispatch, “it’s the alleged suspect.”
“I know how it goes,” Anthony said. “I’m not a suspect, I did it.”
As he is taken back to the stadium, Anthony begins to cry loudly, “he put his hands on me, I told him not to put his hands on me.”
Images of the murder weapon were also released, showing a gray-handled knife with a 3.5-inch blade. The release of evidence also included an uncensored close-up photo of the two-inch wound on Metcalf’s chest.
Prosecution witnesses TESTIFIES that Anthony cursed, provoked and insulted the students after they were asked to leave the tent. A 16-year-old Memorial student said he heard Anthony call students “a bunch of pussies” who “weren’t going to do anything about it” when he refused to leave.
A Centenary student who testified for the defense known under questioning that he was wrong when he initially said Anthony was surrounded before the stabbing. He testified that Antony was then surrounded.
Anthony’s lawyers have criticized “noise” and “completely false information” about the trial, which has drawn national attention and online misinformation involving a white victim and a black defendant.
There were no black jurors on the 12-person jury, selected from a pool of over 500 people. During three days of jury selection, Roach allowed prosecutors to strike three other potential black members. Regardless of one Batson challenge by Anthony’s attorneys, prosecutors successfully argued that the three were struck for the race-neutral reason of being educators of school-age children.
