The US will continue talks with Iranbut the fragile truce is now over, US President Donald Trump said Friday.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue the ‘talks,'” Trump said in a post on social media.
“We have agreed to do this, but the United States has told them, in no uncertain terms, that the ceasefire is over!”
The post comes after a tense NATO summit in Turkey, where Trump scolded allies for not backing his war against Iran.
“It’s a very interesting question. To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them, (Iran),” Trump said at the summit when asked if the interim deal with Iran that called for a long-term peace deal by mid-August was over.
“They are scum. They are sick people. They are led by sick people.”
The United States launched new airstrikes against Iran early Thursday, and Tehran responded by targeting US allies in the Middle East in a shootout.

On Thursday, sirens sounded at least three times in Bahrain, home of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, and missiles targeted Kuwait and Qatar.
The mysterious, intact airstrikes that hit Iran after the US said it ended its strikes have raised questions about who else might be targeting the Islamic Republic.
The attacks on Thursday, just as Iran prepared to bury late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hit areas across southern Iran. The country’s theocracy has not directly blamed anyone, although a lawmaker warned the UAE over alleged support of the US campaign against Iran.
