Several First Nations had challenged the petition in court, arguing it threatened to undermine their treaty rights, which in many cases predate the formation of Alberta in 1905. In a previous ruling, Judge Leonard had delayed Elections Alberta’s verification process, while Wednesday’s ruling shuts down that process entirely.
