Shreyas Iyer on Ireland loss, senior support and mystery surrounding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s debut

“Ireland has defeated us”

Reflecting on the loss in Ireland, Iyer admitted the result was difficult to accept, although he did not call it embarrassing.

“It wasn’t embarrassing but it was disappointing because we didn’t expect Ireland to play that well,” he said.

According to Iyer, India tried to adjust to the conditions and failed to correctly assess the dimensions of the ground and the pitch.

“They outplayed us in every department and had better ideas about the conditions. We failed in our planning and analysis. Credit to them, but we learned a lot from that series.”

The captain believes that the England tour presents a completely different challenge and feels that the team is better prepared.

“Some of us have played in England before. We know the conditions and understand the challenges here. This is a whole new chapter for us.”

The mystery of the feeling of adolescence

Iyer also remained unclear on whether 15-year-old all-rounder Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his international debut during the England series.

“At the moment, we cannot reveal our plans because these discussions remain within the team,” he said.

Praising the youngster, Iyer added: “He is a great talent and whenever he gets an opportunity, I am sure he will do very well.”
