Tech giant Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, suffered a major outage on Friday, leaving users around the world confused and disrupting services. Users across countries reported difficulty accessing their accounts and disruption of key features on the respective platforms.
According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, India and the United States reported the highest number of user complaints, ranging from app crashes and login issues to website outages as the outage affected both apps and internet services.
However, the outage was not limited to the two countries as users from several other regions reported similar complaints around the same time period. According to Downdetector, the outage appears to have started around 19:00 IST.
Some users turned to other platforms, including X, to raise the issue and check if it’s widespread.
The main complaints raised by users include login issues, difficulty uploading their feeds on different platforms, posting updates and sending messages.
Although WhatsApp also reported outages, the main impact of the outage was concentrated on Facebook and Instagram with Downdetector logging over 100,000 reports on Facebook alone.
Meta has not officially reacted to the outage.
Meanwhile, some users have reported that services are returning to normal.
