Mathura: Temples in Mathura and Vrindavan are using water showers, coolers and other such measures to control temperatures inside their premises amid the scorching heat.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Mathura, with heat wave conditions prevailing in parts of the state.
Temples have already started their summer rituals — “fool bangla” decorations, vetiver (khas) curtains, application of sandalwood, perfumed water showers and floral robes for Lord Krishna and other deities to keep the premises cool.
“Devotees love him as ‘lala’ (child) or ‘sakha’ (friend). These rituals reflect their concern that Krishna should not suffer during summer,” said Padma Shri award-winning artist Krishn Kanhai.
In the Bankey Bihari Temple, the deity’s dress and ornaments are made from flower buds.
Mango, muskmelon, cucumber, ‘thandai’ and mango lassi are offered to the deities as ‘prasad’.
Temple authorities said coolers, mist fans, water sprinklers and drinking water facilities have been arranged for devotees, although some visitors complained of insufficient shaded areas outside the temples.
The IMD attributed the prevailing heat wave conditions to clear skies and hot and dry winds across Uttar Pradesh.
