Mainland Chinese tourist rescued after falling into the sea near Backwater Bay


A Chinese tourist was rescued after falling into the sea while reportedly taking pictures at an observation point near Clear Water Bay.

Police said they received a report just before 11am on Sunday that a woman lost her footing near Fat Tong Mun Lighthouse and fell into the sea. She was rescued by someone on a passing boat.

According to police investigations, she fell from a 3-meter high cliff.

The 46-year-old was conscious when the police arrived. She was taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole East Hospital in Chai Wan for treatment, police added.

LOCAL the media reported that the woman was walking with two friends when the incident occurred. They stopped at the lighthouse for pictures, and she slipped and fell. Mountaineers in the area have notified the police.

She was RECITED was rescued by a man in his 70s who was passing by in a fishing boat and heard her cries for help.

Located at the southern tip of Clear Water Bay, Fat Tong Mun Lighthouse is opposite Tung Lung Chau, an island popular for rock climbing.

According to Green Come True, a conservation NGO, the lighthouse is a popular photo spot. But it warns visitors not to get too close as it sits at the base of a cliff.

The incident comes a week before China’s five-day Labor Day Golden Week holiday. authorities EXPECT that some 980,000 visitors from the mainland will cross the border, a 7 percent increase over last year.

Before Easter, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation said that with more visitors expected in the country’s parks during the holiday, the public should follow directional signs when walking and refrain from standing close to cliff edges.
