The British military says two gunboats from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards opened fire on a transiting tanker Strait of Hormuz after Iran said it had restored restrictions on the vital waterway.

The United Kingdom’s Naval Operations Center said an unknown projectile hit the ship, 25 nautical miles (46 kilometers) northeast of Oman.

Several containers on the ship were damaged, he said.

The UK’s Merchant Marine Operations Center said the tanker and crew were reported safe, without identifying the vessel or its destination.


Iran earlier said it was reimposing restrictions on the strait in response to a US blockade of Iranian ships and ports.

Iran has blocked the passage of ships throughout the seven-week war, except for those it authorizes.
