God Of War Laufey is a new game featuring Kratos' wife - but it's not a spin-off

Sony has discovered their new God of War game during the latest State Of Play, but they insist it’s a main entry, despite Kratos not being the main character.

The idea that there will be a God Of War spin-off with Kratos’ second wife has been rumored for a long timeand now Sony has confirmed it’s real, naming God Of War Laufey. Although Kratos’ wife has previously been referred to as Faye, Laufey is one of the names given to her LokiHer mother in traditional Norse mythology.

However, this game seems to be straying too far from any previously created story, as it is set in the afterlife of the gods, called Everywhen. This seemed to be the realm Odin was trying to glimpse Lord of War Ragnaröksince there is a lot of talk from the villains of the game, that there are other ‘masks’.

It’s clear from the footage shown on Tuesday night’s State of Play that the latest rumours were accurate (you’re out of luck predicting a talking gelatinous cube), so we’d be wary of returning to that article, as it may feature major story spoilers that don’t include gameplay footage.

The game is from series creator Santa Monica Studio, which reinforces the idea that this is a major entry, but not one starring Kratos – though he does appear more than once in the footage. Previous director Cory Barlog is still on board as Head of Creative, but the director this time will be Ariel Lawrence, who has been a producer on many previous entries.

We’d highly recommend watching the footage for yourself, but it starts with Kratos and Aretus/Loki burning Faye’s body ( The PlayStation Blog keeps referring to her as Faye, so we assume the game will too), at which point she wakes up in the afterlife of the gods.

She appears to have a shard of mask on her palm, which has affected her magic in some way, though what it is capable of is unclear. Faye has been consistently depicted as a giant in previous God Of War games, despite always appearing as a normal size.

You soon encounter Begtse, the Tibetan Buddhist god of war (and erstwhile Mongol god) and Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of medicine. What they’re doing isn’t clear, but they and their troops are seen collecting various supernatural beings and putting them in cages, where you meet Phranque the gelatinous cube (played by Jack Quaid), who has a sword stuck in it. The ribbon on the sword speaks (with a Kiwi accent) and is called Rue.

The most obvious point from the footage is that a) the graphics look fantastic and b) the action is much more dynamic and lively than the last two games. Santa Monica Studio talk about being most influenced by Greek entries of the era, but games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta seem a much more obvious comparison, especially since Faye is seen juggling enemies in the air and being much lighter on her feet than Kratos.

Her magic also looks interesting, as while she can fire generic magical blasts, she can also draw souls from enemies and then beat them up, before striking them back to explode against their mortal bodies.

You don’t have a much safer pair of hands than Santa Monica Studio, so the big question here isn’t so much if it’s going to be good than when it’s going to come out. Although State of Play was very helpful in providing release dates for a number of other games, there was no indication of when God Of Wary Laufey would be released, not even a year.

Since Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was not mentioned at all, that makes Sony’s upcoming lineup very unclear, with only the newly announced Until Dawn 2 confirmed for 2027.
