Egypt’s Mostafa Zico hits out at referee, calls Argentina World Cup clash ‘fixed’ after controversial VAR decisions

Egypt has only itself to blame

Despite the frustration for the referees, Egypt cannot point to VAR alone for their elimination.

They were leading 2-0 with just 12 minutes plus time remaining and failed to defend their lead. For all the controversy surrounding the decisions, Egypt have only themselves to blame for allowing such a commanding lead to slip against the reigning world champions.

Zico responded to the disappointment of seeing his first goal disallowed by scoring again to restore Egypt’s two-goal cushion.

In the end, however, Lionel Messi showed once again why he is considered one of the greatest players in football history. The Argentina captain inspired another remarkable comeback as the hosts scored three unanswered goals to end Egypt’s historic World Cup run in heartbreaking fashion.
