‘Don’t take it so sentimentally’: the Supreme Court rejects the urgent plea hearing against the Buburreci Janta Party

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday told a petitioner not to get so emotional about the Janta Cockroach Party case when the lawyer mentioned a petition related to it for emergency listing.

The request presented in Supreme Court demands a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the activities of persons associated with the Buburrec Janta Party.

When advocate NK Goswami, appearing for the petitioner, said the party was tarnishing the image of the judiciary, a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and VM Pancholi said, “Don’t take it so sentimentally.”

According to the Bar and Bench, another lawyer said the petitioners are demanding a CBI probe into the fake law degree issue, adding that courtroom exchanges cannot be used for commercial purposes. In response, Justice Surya Kant said, “There is no such dire urgency. We will see.”

The Cockroach Janta Party is a satirical social media movement that emerged in response to a verbal comment made by Justice Surya Kant during a hearing where he equated unemployed youths who attack systems in the guise of online activism to “cockroaches”.

The Chief Justice then clarified that he was referring to people with fake diplomas.

The social media of the Buburreci Janata Party, which amassed millions of followers within days, was later suspended.
