Two people accused of hiding the body of a child and the desecration of human remains in the death of a Halifax newborn appeared practically before a judge on Friday.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his wife Ramandeep Kaur, 26, are also charged with resisting a peace officer and obstruction of justice.
Both attorneys representing the two asked that their election and admission be delayed, citing a significant amount of discovery.
The charges stem from an emergency search in May for a missing newborn baby. whose remains were eventually found in a wooded area in Goodwood, NS
Halifax Regional Police first learned of the missing baby on May 22, when the newborn’s mother was taken to hospital by ambulance in life-threatening condition after appearing to have just been born.
She remained unanswered and died in hospital the following week.
Singh has been described by police as a relative of the newborn’s mother. Both Singh and Kaur remain in custody.

In June, the defense attorney representing Kaur said he expected to receive the autopsy results “soon,” but on Friday, questions about the circumstances leading to the mother and child’s deaths remained unanswered.
Both defense attorneys said they are now in the process of obtaining and reviewing a large amount of discovery documents, including the medical examiner’s reports.
Singh and Kaur remain in custody and are scheduled to return to court on September 14, when they are expected to appear again on video.
