Zheng Yongnian, an influential government adviser and political scientist, has called for an “urgent” reassessment of Beijing’s traditional policy of non-intervention, which Chinese policymakers have called a “golden rule” of international relations. A core tenet of China’s foreign policy since 1955, the doctrine has helped Beijing differentiate itself from Western powers while fending off criticism over issues such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
