Police investigating Northeast Calgary fire believed to be suspicious – Calgary

Many in a northeast Calgary community say they’ve been feeling a little tired lately after a fire over the weekend.

“We have always felt that we are safe in this community,” says Manish Ragput, “but now after this scenario happened we are somewhat worried and alarmed.”

Calgary Fire was called to the 13000 block of Coventry Hills Way NE around 4:40 a.m. Saturday, March 14, for a structure fire.

“When our fire crews arrived, they noticed some damage to the exterior of the home,” says Alex Kwan, Calgary Fire Public Information Officer.

“(They) went in and called a work fire and found a fire in the basement ceiling.”

Calgary Fire says there were two occupants in the home at the time who were able to get out safely without injury before crews showed up.

It’s not yet known how the fire started, but Calgary police say they are investigating it as suspicious.

Global News has obtained surveillance video that appears to show someone walking by the involved home. The person can be seen walking towards the back of the house before leaving the camera’s view.

Moments later, they are seen again, but this time they are fleeing the area after what sounds like an explosion.

Several people who posted on social media described seeing someone on their surveillance footage carrying what appeared to be a fuel container.

Kendra Aaron, who lives nearby, says the latest incident is alarming because “this isn’t the first time this has happened,” recalling a series of fires in the community just a few months ago.

“I even told my husband that I was very worried that there might have been arson or something in the area because it was so frequent and so random,” says Aaron.

Police have not confirmed whether Saturday’s fire was arson or whether a fuel container was involved.

However, they are asking anyone with security video of any pedestrians and vehicles traveling in and out of the area between 3am and 5am to call them.
