JMM will go to only 19 seats in Assam as seat sharing talks with Congress fail

RANCHI: Despite extensive discussions, no consensus could be reached on seat-sharing between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress party, prompting the JMM to independently contest the Assam Assembly elections.

Party functionaries said it will field candidates in 19 constituencies across the state.

According to party sources, negotiations to contest the elections in alliance with the Congress continued until the evening of March 22; however, the two sides could not reach an agreement regarding the allocation of seats. The Congress was not ready to offer more than seven seats, while the JMM was claiming 20 seats, due to which they failed to reach a consensus, they said.

After the failure of the talks, JMM has now decided to contest the elections independently with 19 mandates.

JMM Central General Secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey also claimed that the party will field candidates in 19 seats, while one seat is left for the CPI (ML).

Today, being the last date for submitting candidacies, the party has moved quickly to finalize its strategy.
