You’ve heard of Pergamon, Altes Museum, Bode, right? With more than 175 different museums, Berlin is a culture lover’s paradise. This also means there are lots of really cool exhibits to see! Here are five lesser known museums to visit in Berlin!

Located on the western outskirts of the city, Berggruen is certainly worth the trip! It is home to incredibly impressive works by artists such as Matisse, Cézanne and Giacometti. However, the highlights are first the more than 120 works by Picasso that follow the development of his life and career. The early pieces date from when the artist was only 16 years old and still studying, to his blue and pink periods, the cubist period and finally his later works. Berggruen’s second feature is the large collection of Paul Klee’s works spanning his life.
Located on the site of the former SS headquarters during the Third Reich in Berlin, this free museum documents the history of Nazi terror in Europe through photographs, written texts, audio and film recordings. Here you can see various permanent and special exhibitions, understandably shocking and sobering, without fantasizing about the Nazi reign.

The DDR Museum gives visitors a glimpse of what it was like for those in East Berlin before the wall came down. Despite the somber theme, this interactive museum is actually very interesting and makes for a surprisingly fun day out. Everything is designed to be touched – from the reconstruction of the East German apartment to the interrogation room. Listen to some East German pop music and be sure to try some Vita Cola (East German lemon flavored cola) on the way out.

Another glimpse into Berlin’s troubled history can be found at the former Stasi prison. Located a little outside the center, this lesser-known museum contains everything you’d expect: machine gun towers, barbed wire, windowless cells, water torture facilities and much more. Former prison inmates give guided tours.
To end on a lighter note, we suggest you check out a museum entirely dedicated to Berlin’s legendary street food: the currywurst. Have you ever heard of it? This delicious diced sausage is drenched in curry flavored ketchup and served with a side of fries to culminate in a true gastronomic masterpiece. The museum guides you through the invention of the dish in the 1940s, the ingredients that go into this Berlin staple and, of course, lets you enjoy one on a giant sausage-shaped couch.
