Construction of the University Bridge for the Bus Rapid Transit plan begins in April

Starting the week of April 6 through June, University Bridge in Saskatoon will be closed for work on the city’s bus rapid transit plan.

The start date was a bit confusing as the contractors accidentally decided BuIldINg signs that say work will start on March 31. The city apologizes and confirms that construction will begin in week 6, weather permitting.

The bridge will not be fully closed throughout the summer, allowing for a flow of traffic as improvements are made to the College Drive and Clarence Avenue intersection. There will be alternating traffic during the construction of the bridge, but officials do not yet know a timeline for when we will see this.

“So they’re then going to work on one set of lanes… they say they’re working on the north side first, then there’s going to be two-way traffic, one lane in each direction on the south set of lanes. Then when those northbound lanes are finished, we’ll bring them back,” said Terry Schmidt, general manager of Saskatoon Transportation and Construction.

Emergency vehicles will have one lane open for them during construction to enter the hospital.

This is just the first phase of the College Drive Bus Rapid construction as they will be doing work between Cumberland Avenue and Hospital Drive throughout the year.
