Prime Minister Mark Carney statement on Saturdayin response to the shootings targeting Canadian synagogues — this time in Toronto and Thornhill, north of the city — was notable for one reason: It didn’t acknowledge that what had happened “has no place in Canada,” or use any similar words. It was a small mercy in a very troubling time. At this point, the phrase has transcended cliché and entered the realm of offensive nonsense.
