at marathon The series has been around since 1994, when developer Bungie was now more well-known. radius and fortune — Launch of the original FPS for the Apple Macintosh After nearly 30 years, the cult series returns as an online extraction shooter with a unique look and promises of brutal action on a decaying planet.
Extraction Shooters were considered a niche genre for the “hardcore” gaming crowd, but they are growing rapidly. Ark Riders has made the shooting sub-genre more popular for a general audience. Can Marathon repeat this success? we think so Even though biocybernetic mercenaries roamed the ruins, Mr. Seti IV’s lost colonies make it a more unforgiving place than post-apocalyptic Italy.
We wanted to ask Bungie specifically Julia Nardin (Creative Director), Joe Ziegler (Game Director), and Brian Vinton (Senior Art Director) about their plans to recruit curious runners. And can we expect the universe-building to be as dense as Destiny from it? Post-launch roadmap.
Another area of concern for Marathon is that it is aimed at new players. Especially those who have no clue about the series’ previous history, Nardin kicks things off by saying that there is There are “multiple ways to tell a story,” with strict multiplayer compensating for the lack of a more traditional, video game campaign and subtle storytelling:
“The main issue is to wipe out the abandoned colonies. So we set out to tell the best story possible about that colony and the people who lived there,” Nardin explains. “Most of it was done through robbery. There are text files and audio recordings you can collect that will help you piece together what happened on Tau Ceti IV.”
“Many of the contracts you receive from stakeholders in Marathon expeditions also guide you and your team through that journey. It encourages you to explore different angles. of the world on the way to creating profits and mutual understanding. Durandal Definitely coming back And we also have many new characters, both humans AIAnd everything in between!”
There’s also a marathon. The voice acting is quite overlapping.Although most of the actual ‘running’ involves prowling, grabbing valuables, and gunfights with bots and players. Those names aren’t the only added value, and Nardin dares to promise that. “Some unexpected twists that we hope will surprise everyone.”
The newly launched Marathon isn’t meant to “replace” the original trilogy, although Infinity’s alt-reality arc and how this new entry ties into the whole thing remains a big mystery, which may serve its purpose.
In addition to what is already there and ready to be revealed. The game’s ‘live storytelling’ will unfold throughout the season. (This includes both free content and paid cosmetics.) Speaking about this important part of Marathon, Nardin emphasized that Bungie has learned some lessons from Destiny 2’s mistakes and past content ‘skips’:
“We want Marathon to be an extended experience in the sense that all promises and priority story content are intended to last. This means that it doesn’t matter when you join. You’ll still be able to play through scheduled missions and complete your Codex with achievements and collections that help you discover additional layers of the world. We will add to this foundation over time in the live service environment. It depends on how our players respond and on the timing we can support. But we know which direction we want. to go in and we want to continue creating something for the community to discover.”
Moving on to the game’s stunning visual presentation, we had to ask Vinton, one of the game’s lead art artists, how Bungie tapped into its incredible cyberpunk DNA. technology elements and how the sci-fi imagery is reminiscent of previous works. According to him, it all started with the “structure” of the old Marathon game and “drilled down” the industrial sci-fi elements and “sharp graphic design” developed alongside the studio during development. radius and the game of fate
“In Marathon we call this ‘Retro Futuristic Graphics’, a blend of retro roots Strange modern technology and images associated with modern technology, such as the digital color reproduction you see when rendered. and lattice structures seen with 3D printing… Our approach was to make the strange and unexpected look cool, in a signature Bungie and Marathon way. Yes, the tone of cyberpunk and the tech set thrives on the search for freshness and surprise. And now they have become a pillar of the game’s identity,” he explains.
Obviously, Marathon is more inclined towards science fiction and cosmic horror. There’s an obvious ‘space fantasy’ in the two Destiny games, some of which comes from the darker parts of Halo (remember the Flood?), but it’s all very awkward here.
For Nardin, it was important and a natural “inversion” of what Bungie fans have come to expect. “It was a natural fit for an extraction shooter where we need to maintain a constant sense of tension. Our plan is to evolve Tau Ceti IV over time in a way that strengthens the core of the game. It sets it apart from other Bungie games as our community’s presence on the planet begins to influence what might be lurking out there,” she added.
Hungry ‘Legends’ can also look forward to learning more about the universe that we haven’t seen and interacted with directly in Tau Ceti IV. From my time playing the game so far, Marathon has been full. lots of rich lore and anecdotes, as part of Codex entries, voice recordings, dialogue sequences, and surprising cutscenes. In addition to the main mystery of the game Expected to focus on “Players’ relationships with different groups Home on Earth and Mars” and “Colonists joining the (doomed) expedition” runners and what nature hints at are “Parallel stories” will also develop.
Nardin points out that there is interest in exploring “Runners as a community” and people “Willing to sacrifice the human body” for an augmented body: “Your consciousness has been copied. Makes you immortal in use But it must come at a great personal cost. And are you really you?” Marathon isn’t just about alien planets. But it was also the thrill of raiding the remains of the colonists. Those looking for a deeper sci-fi theme Those who are willing to read and listen will also be fed.
To wrap things up, and look at the actual video game in front of us, we also asked Ziegler about his plans for players who don’t like regular teams. “When launched We will provide both single queue and Cheating experience for solo players,” he confirms. It’s a solid start, with the Rook being an unusual class in that it’s a way to enter competitive play as a silent scavenger – but ‘Duo’ queue may happen soon too.
In any case He and the rest of the team hope “players will discover the joy of playing as a team.” My experience with Marathon so far tells me that’s the best way to experience what it has to offer. But I’m glad that Bungie hasn’t forgotten about “lone wolf” players, and there’s a lot more that could be on the horizon beyond solo queue and playing as. Chuppy– Like a robot among three people.
