In December 2021, Everton Downey stabbed his girlfriend Melissa Blimkie 15 times on a staircase in a mall in Burnaby. She died. Downey was convicted for second degree murder. In February, the Supreme Court of British Columbia CONVICTED with life imprisonment, the minimum sentence defined in the Criminal Code. The Crown asked for no chance of parole for at least 15 years. But Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes ruled for 12 years, in part because of the “extenuating circumstances of his background,” as described in Assessing the impact of race and culture (IRCA).
