Six ultra-rare Rolexes every collector covets

Rolex Submariner 6538 “Big Crown” reference

  • Sold at Sotheby’s, December 2025. Realization: $431,800

The latter breaks the pattern of the rest of the list. While every other watch here is rare because so few were made or because a specific example carries a unique history, Reference 6538 is rare because of what has happened to it since then. It is the early Submariner grail, instantly recognizable by its large 8mm crown and lack of crown guards, and is the exact reference most closely associated with the Submariner Sean Connery dressed as James Bond in Dr.

Unlike every other watch on this list, the challenge is less about finding one, but more about finding one that hasn’t been ruined by decades of actual use. These were dive watches, and people dove into them, and so bezels were changed, cases thinned, dials aged unevenly, and service parts inserted over the years. A collector can find a 6538 without too much trouble, but finding one with the right number, an honest case and genuine provenance is another matter entirely.

Christie’s set the benchmark record in 2018, when a rare example with an Explorer dial sold for $1,068,500 despite missing the bezel. Sotheby’s recently sold a December 2025 family-owned Big Crown James Bond example for $431,800 against an estimate of $100,000-$200,000, proof that even under record setting, a fresh and honest early Submariner can still fetch serious money.

Buying a 6538 itself is realistic and patience plus good advice goes a long way. But finding a pristine, well-preserved watch is the real challenge and the main difference that separates this watch from everything else on this list. For collectors priced at even an honest 6538, Tudor Big Crown Submariners from the same era have a similar oversized crown look at a fraction of the cost, with the added appeal that comes from Rolexown sibling brand and using similar cases at the time.
