Body of 11-year-old girl found in West Bengal’s Baruipur, man lynched on rape-murder charges


Baruipur (BB): The body of an 11-year-old girl, who went missing a day ago, was found in Baruipur area in of West Bengal District 24 of South Parganas on Sunday, after which a mob lynched a man rape-murder charges, police said.

The girl’s body was found stuffed in a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area this morning, sparking a protest by locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar road, burnt tires and damaged several police vehicles, demanding the arrest of the accused, a senior officer said.

A man was beaten to death by angry locals alleging his involvement in the girl’s death, said Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke to the deceased girl’s father over phone and assured him that the culprits will be dealt with in the strictest manner and punished according to law, sources said.

Police said four people have been arrested in connection with the girl’s death.

Urging the protesters to remove the road blockade, IGP Barui announced that all those involved in the crime will be arrested and receive the maximum punishment after trial.

“Prime Minister Suvendu Adhikari called me and said that action will be taken against all the culprits and they will be punished,” the officer told the protesters, while addressing them through a megaphone.

Barui said he would meet the parents of the deceased girl on Tuesday, promising them all help.

Stating that police raids are underway to nab the culprits, the IGP said, “Nobody will be spared.”

The girl’s body was then allowed by the protesters to be sent for an autopsy. The blockade was lifted after the assurance of the IGP.

The dead body has been sent to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for postmortem, police said, adding that the cause of death and whether she was sexually assaulted will be known after the autopsy report.

A police officer said the girl went missing on Saturday afternoon after leaving home to buy a present for her friend’s birthday.

The girl’s family members claimed that four people had taken her by force.
