Five songs you need to listen to this week (June 29, 2026)

Is it the end of June already? Let’s dive deep into some summer music with PUP (wild video), Feeble Little Horse (nice twee stuff) and some wild post-punk from the UK and Ireland.

1. PUP, Concrete
Who will take care of the dogs? (Little Dipper/Rise)
Recommended if you like: Labors of Love

Another song from the album Who will take care of the dogs?. This video is bananas, which took a full year to make using analog stop-motion technology. It’s all handmade – all 2,3000 frames – of her. No AI is used anywhere. Okay, guys.

2. The weak little horse, Turn back
Bitknot (Saddle Creek)
RIYL: Groups with adorable names

I’m not sure if the images conjured up by the name of this Pittsburgh four-piece act are cool or make me sad. Whatever your impression, the music is very pop, soft, melodic and reminiscent of bands like Belle and Sebastian and maybe The Sundays. Sweet things.

3. Westside Cowboy, Kick Stones (The Boys)
She goes one (island)
RIYL: Whatever is happening in Manchester at any given time.

They’ve only been around for a few years, but Manchester’s Westside Cowboys have already released more than half a dozen singles and two EPs. Their debut album (where this single comes from) will be here on August 21st. And I think they are foot fans.

4. RIP Magic, opacity
Single (Section 1/Partisan)
RIYL: Dance punk

Hailing from London, this four-piece (which includes a brother and sister) managed to sell out a number of shows without releasing a single thing. Tyler, The Creator is a fan, as is LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, who produced some of their material. This song sounds like it’s going to split in all directions at any second, but they somehow manage to hold it together until the end.

5. Like Band, giraffes
Singles (Approximate Trade)
RIYL: Well, Mark E. Smith and The Fall, for one.

More intense post-punk, this time from Dublin. Gilla Band (formerly known as Girl Band) have been going strong since 2011 and have developed a style that is not for the faint of heart. Come for the distortion at the start and stay for the bouncy beats that come about two-thirds of the way through. And remember, don’t say the c word if you can. (You’ll see.)
