NATO allies have agreed to modernize the Alliance’s nuclear capabilities and strengthen its nuclear planning capacity.
The Nuclear Planning Group (NPG), NATO’s top body on nuclear deterrence issues, met on Thursday ahead of the alliance’s ministerial summit.
Ministers reaffirmed that strategic nuclear forces remain the ultimate guarantee of Allies’ security, supporting NATO’s enhanced deterrence framework.
In her final STATEMENTThe NPG emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure, effective and credible nuclear posture aimed at maintaining peace, deterring aggression and deterring coercion.
On burden sharing, the Allies reaffirmed their commitment to share the responsibilities, risks and costs of collective defense by investing in the resources, capabilities and forces needed to carry out NATO’s nuclear mission and to demonstrate the unity and resolve of the Alliance.
All NATO allies, except France, which has chosen not to participate, are members of the NPG, regardless of whether they possess nuclear weapons. The group generally meets at the level of defense ministers.
Arriving at the summit, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen highlighted the Finnish Parliament’s adoption of legislation integrating NATO’s nuclear deterrence into Finland’s defense framework.
“Yesterday, the Finnish Parliament approved our legislative proposal, which fully incorporates NATO’s nuclear deterrence in Finland’s defense,” he said in X.
