EastEnders kicked off 2026 with a bang New Year’s Eve specialand there was a lot to unpack.

It’s been six months since the BBC soap gave us a glimpse into 2027 and a lot has happened. While we’re no closer to answers to some of the events from the flashforward, other stories are starting to take shape.

If you’re a soap detective and have an intricate chart outlining every clue, theory and red herring, complete with bits of string, then we totally respect you.

We also understand if you’ve forgotten everything the episode revealed, and we’re sorry you need a refresher after all the life-changing events of the last few months in Walford.

There was certainly a lot to digest. But don’t worry, we’ve worked tirelessly to explain everything ‘Enders teased in the episode in this handy guide.

We even have subtitles. You are welcome.

Wedding bells are ringing in Walford for the romance series Max Branning (Jake Wood) on January 1, 2027, but the lucky – or maybe not so – bride remains a mystery.

Fifth time lucky? Apparently not, as Max begins his wedding day in bed with another (pregnant) woman before being met by an army of police, forced to jump out of a window, betrayed by his daughter, arrested for soliciting murder, interviewed by the police, all before returning home to discover a gun-crazed man who has kidnapped both of his children.

Not only that, but the tuna tartare Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) had asked for the wedding buffet has been replaced with pulled pork. Eurgh.

I mean, soap wedding They rarely get away without a hitch or three, but this one takes the cake!

Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) apparently has custody of baby Ethan. Who is baby Ethan? We have absolutely no idea, though a later discussion reveals that Max apparently saved his (and Jimmy’s) life at some point last year.

Is Ethan Jack? Or, more importantly, he is NO Denise Foxand (Diane Parish)? Is that what drives them away?

Could he have walked her down the aisle with his brother, for whom she had no time before?

It is very possible that baby Ethan is real Penny Branningand (Kitty Castledine) the boy. character is letting Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota) believe he is father, but actually it is Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway).

Can Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal) have killed Penny, is that why Ethan is with Jack?

Is Lauren having an affair? (Photo: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron)

It has been proven early that Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) and Max are not on good terms. She is willing to attend his wedding, but the husband Peter Beale (Thomas Law) certainly isn’t, especially after ‘what happened’. While the brother Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) is definitely in a much better place with their father, Lauren’s steely.

While accompanying her Uncle Jack (with mysterious baby Ethan), Lauren receives a text asking them to meet at the ‘usual place’ and as she (briefly) hides Max in her house after he runs away from his house, he informs her that he knows exactly what he’s done.

She is later very disturbed in the presence of a mysterious man as she is comforted by him Peter Beale (Thomas Law).

Returning home with Oscar, she receives another text, telling him it’s ‘decision time’, and as she goes to leave, she is stopped by the same man who grabbed the gun earlier.

Said man has since been confirmed as Mark Fowler Jr (Stephen Aaron-Sipple). It’s been heavily teased over the past few months that Lauren and Mark will be dating, and she’s already getting closer to him because of to the stolen car concert in which the two are involved.

When Max states that he knows what she’s up to, is he aware of an affair between the two? Is the decision she has to make between Mark and Peter?

More importantly, is she more like her father than she wants to believe?

As with baby Ethan and the mysterious man, the armed villain offers no clues as to his identity, but unlike the first, we also don’t see his face. Does this indicate that he is someone we know? In addition Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Ravi Gulati (Aaron Tiara), who else living in Albert Square has easy access to a gun and is skilled at kidnapping?

Now we know Ravi’s partner Priya Nandra-Heart (Sophie Khan Levy) has slept with Max, which raises the possibility that Ravi is the man with the gun.

But surely none of them would later make Max choose one of his children to die? I mean, they’ve both been bad, but no that bad!

It’s clear that Max has made a terrible enemy…

Max’s ties to crime?

After being arrested for ‘attempting murder’ (ordering death, basically), the policeman in charge of the investigation questions Max about his ‘criminal contacts’. The swarm of armed cops who earlier came to pick him up also shows that the authorities think Max is too dangerous.

Has Max stepped into the void left by Phil and Ravi as Walford’s face of gangsterism? Honestly? I hope not…

However, his earlier statements to Lauren that he is involved in something bad but is completely innocent suggest that he has gotten in over his head and not inexplicably become a crime lord.

Something big is going to happen and Max will be clearly seen as the bad guy. Lauren can’t believe the wedding is going ahead given ‘what happened’, Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) is just as shocked and everything that happened had an effect on Ian, who also had a relationship with the bride.

It will also drive Jack and Max further apart and further strain Max and Peter’s relationship.

With his reputation still in tatters, what more can happen to cement Max as the black sheep of his family?

While the lucky lady (?) is not confirmed throughout the episode, four candidates are revealed when Jack calls said bride to inform her of Max’s arrest.

Chelsea Fox (Zarah Abrahams), Linda Carter (Kelly Bright), Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) and Denise’s phones ring suspiciously at the same time and reveal that Denise’s daughter and Chelsea’s sister, Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu) is back lends credence to the theory that Max is marrying a fox.

Chelsea described Max as skilled in an episode before the attack, when the pair shared serious eye contact. Linda has a child with Max and was the reason he decided to stay in Walford. Denise is the wild card here, although it was said earlier in the episode that she and Jack are on bad terms.

Perhaps the worst hint of who the bride will be is the fact that next week, Cindy and Max are set to get engaged. However, we still have many months ahead of us before the big day, so there’s every chance that Max will eventually end up engaged to someone else…

Who is the bride?

Knowing Max, it could be anyone! The person he spent the night with is pregnant though, and with a sonogram video shown the day before the flash forward, we’re thinking Max is the father.

Since Max’s wedding is hardly kept a secret, we also assume that whoever the pregnant lady is, she’s fully aware of Max’s other life.

Fingers crossed it isn’t Jasmine Fisher (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness), who is grandfather, Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker), confirms that Oscar is a ‘Trueman’ now, implying that they are still together. Or is it a Trueman because now it’s with Josh Goodwin (Joshua Vaughan)?

Surely Max wouldn’t sleep with another partner of his children?!

What happened to Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington)? No idea, sorry.

Maybe she stopped?
