There was something changeable about him Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) in Coronation Street for a while, starting when The wizard of wine (Harriet Bibby) swore blind that he could provide her with an alibi for the night of the year Theo Silvertonand (James Cartwright) Murder…but he didn’t.
That’s because, just before seeing Summer, Tyrone accidentally fell on the dowry he was holding Kevin Websterand (Michael LeVell) car above Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard). Carl was trying to sabotage the vacation after a final showdown with his brother and the theft of his getaway fund.
The car fell on Carl, seriously injuring him. Panicking, Tyrone fled the scene – crossing paths and nervous glances with Vera – and crashed into Ronnie Bailey (Morgan won), who took the situation in stride, placing Carl in the back of his car and depositing him outside the hospital, later cleaning it thoroughly to ensure all traces of his hated stepfather were removed.
The reason Tyrone can’t provide Summer with the alibi she so desperately needs is because it would put him near the garage at the time Carl suffered his most serious injury and also lead to the revelation that Ronnie drove him to the hospital and knew all about the violent act.
Tyrone, however, as we know, is a genuinely decent guy, and the knowledge that he’s the reason Summer is languishing in a jail cell is eating him alive.
Despite Ronnie’s sheepish pleas to keep his cool and that the situation will take care of itself, our Ty can hardly stand it.
When Carl happened upon a collision between Tyrone and Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), who would visit a distraught Summer, who couldn’t understand why Tyrone was lying, his eyes gleaming with the potential to stir the pot, and as Ronnie hurried Tyrone out, Carl quickly followed, listening as Tyrone lamented his overwhelming guilt and fear that he had lied to the police.
Though Ronnie, as always, tried to calm Tyron down, it wasn’t to be, and as they re-entered the pub, Todd’s frantic question made Tyrone jump to his feet, and though Ronnie did his best to avoid Carl’s intervention, it was too late.
The following week Carl makes it clear to Tyrone that he is not ready.
Swanning at the Rovers as Phys Dobbs (Jennie McAlpine) declares he’s off to dust her nose, Carl sees Tyrone’s embarrassment and like a shark sniffing blood, decides to play a little with his prey.
Tyrone tries to stay strong, asking Carl to ‘do one’, but the worst Webster isn’t so easily dispatched and he moves a little closer, hoping to see a few beads of sweat form on our Ty’s forehead.
Challenging Tyrone to do something, Carl feels victorious when he doesn’t. Wrapping up a stool, Carl correctly guesses that the look in his eyes is a mixture of guilt and fear.
