Suvendu Adhikari starts election campaign against Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.

KOLKATA: BJP leader and outgoing Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday launched his campaign against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her home turf Bhabanipur, one of the most high-profile assembly constituencies in the state.

Suvendu, who had defeated Mamata in East Midnapore district’s Nandigram constituency in the 2021 assembly elections by a narrow margin of around 2,000 votes, visited several municipal wards in Bhabanipur in the morning to reach out to voters ahead of a second face-off between the two leaders after Nandi.

Mamata had earlier won from Bhabanipur in the 2021 elections, defeating BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal by a margin of around 58,000 votes. The Trinamool Congress had fielded him in Bhabanipur after sitting MP Sobhandeb Chatterjee resigned in the same year.

Bhabanipur will go to polls in the second phase scheduled on April 29.

Suvendu, together with party workers, started the campaign from Ward No. 70 under the Calcutta Municipal Corporation and visited the Chakraberia market. He, along with party leader Tapas Roy and others, spoke to people in the market area and asked if they were facing any problems allegedly created by local Trinamool Congress workers.

In some areas, BJP supporters welcomed him with garlands and drums.
