IPL 2026 | Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turns history upside down: Here are the records he broke

The Rajasthan Royals youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continue to shock the cricketing world as they rewrite the history books of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a breathtaking 29-ball 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the records the 15-year-old broke during the massacre:

  1. Sooryavanshi hit 65 sixes in IPL 2026, the most by any batsman in a T20 tournament, surpassing Chris Gayle’s 59 in IPL 2012. Surprisingly, Sooryavanshi needed just 266 balls compared to Gayle’s 456.

  2. He reached his 50 off 16 balls during the qualifier, equaling the fastest half-century in IPL playoff history along with Suresh Raina’s 16-ball fifty in IPL 2014 Qualifier 2.

  3. Sooryavanshi hit 12 sixes during the match, the most by an Indian batsman in an IPL innings. He matched his record set earlier this season against SRH in Jaipur. Sooryavanshi’s 12 sixes are also the most by any knock in an IPL playoff match, eclipsing Shubman Gill’s ten sixes in IPL 2023 Qualifier 2.

  4. He hit his first ten sixes in 24 balls, the fastest ever in IPL history. Chris Gayle had previously reached the mark in 27 balls during his iconic 175* in 2013.

  5. 8 sixes were hit by the young RR batsman in the powerplay, the highest at this stage in an IPL innings. The previous best was seven, achieved by five players including Sooryavanshi himself earlier this season.

  6. Sooryavanshi scored 490 runs in the power over this season, now the highest ever in an IPL edition, surpassing David Warner’s 467 in 2016.
