Donald Trump media channel – New Statesman

American civilization is rapidly going backwards in time. Kant brought philosophy into the modern age by locating reality not objectively in the world outside our heads, but in the way we understand the world. Well, in America, where more and more people, starting with the Chief, happen to live inside their own heads, the commentator classes regularly declare a new objective reality. The latest revolutionary perception is that the seeming collapse of right-wing pundit Ben Shapiro’s media empire means the complete replacement of the center by Maga extremists. Not enough.

Ben Shapiro has long been the wonder of the American right. An intellectual and musical master, he is said to have brought guests to tears at a fancy Hollywood dinner party as a boy when he accompanied his composer/pianist father on the violin for a rendition of the theme Schindler’s List. Raised by Orthodox-Jewish, Reagan-Republican parents—his mother was a Hollywood TV executive—he excelled as a pro-Israel, conservative columnist for his college paper, becoming, at age 17, the youngest syndicated columnist ever for a major network newspaper. His first book, Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America’s Youth published when he was 20, it became a bestseller.

Remarkably, he evolved into a conservative mandarin along a typical path of the liberal elite, going from Hollywood to Harvard, where he received his law degree. In 2012, he ended up as a columnist in Breitbart Newsthe precursor to what would become the paradigm-shifting conservative media universe. Three years later, he co-founded, with a Hollywood producer, The Daily wirewhich grew into a hugely successful and influential media conglomerate consisting of podcasts, streaming shows and feature films.

A fixture at the Cpac conventions, here and in Hungary (under Orban), a defender of Ice, staunch supporter of Trumpism, campaigner against gay marriage and trans people — where his Orthodox Judaism neatly converged with the Christian right — Shapiro, at the same time, has tried to preserve his parents’ commitment to the new, Reaganite politicians. the extremes. Although fundamentally sympathetic to Maga, he seems as repulsed by Trump’s character as any member of the liberal elite. He told PBS The front line in 2017 Trump was, essentially, a chaotic mess of feelings and moods, hardly a statesman. While liberal pundits were pouncing on “populism,” he saw it from a populist bent, rightly describing it as a “strategy” and “not an ideology.”

And as a liberal right thinking were signaling their sophistication and sense of fair play by pouncing on Maga-incubus Steve Bannon as some sort of cross between Metternich and de Maistre, Shapiro rightly summed up, ex-banker that Bannon was, as “more balls than brains.” Shapiro is too smart to just be Maga, but he’s too bigoted to be classified, as he often is, as a remnant of the “establishment” or neo-conservative right. He is a fickle insider, mainstream conservative one day, extreme provocateur the next.

Consequently, the yarmulke-wearing Shapiro is Jewish. Furthermore, he is a right-wing Zionist, an unapologetic defender of Israel’s actions in Gaza and Iran. This has put him at odds with figures like Candace Owens, who started him Daily wire but was interrupted by Shapiro after she used anti-Semitic tropes about Jews running Washington and Hollywood. In response, she called Shapiro a “worm” and a “parasite.” There is no love lost between Shapiro and Tucker Carlson. Shapiro has described Carlson as a “virulent” “nut” who takes aim at dictators and Jew-haters, with Carlson simply saying that Shapiro’s insults make him “laugh.” If you didn’t know better, you’d think you were trapped in an endless high school nightmare.

About two and a half weeks ago, Washington Post published an article reporting that Shapiro’s Daily wire the media empire was on the verge of collapse. She created one chills through chills-Dependent media, but it was a particularly incoherent story. On the one hand, she used the fact that the company had laid off 13 percent of its workforce as evidence of its catastrophic decline. On the other hand, she observed with dedication that Daily wire it’s still more popular than the hugely popular Paramount. That didn’t stop the reporter who wrote the story, Drew Harwell, from attributing it Daily wireThe “decline” of the company’s “traditional brand of conservatism, exemplified by Shapiro’s intense support for Israel (which has) has clashed with right-wing creatives who promise a more radical brand of anti-establishment, anti-establishment rage.” Harwell continues to quote Owens on the irrelevance of Shapiro and his company, despite the fact that Owens, having been cashed in and insulted by Shapiro, is hardly a neutral observer. To make matters even more confusing, Harwell details one bad business decision after another as an even more fundamental cause of Shapiro’s downfall. The article ends up being as chaotic as the new reality it tries to describe.

This did not stop the liberal media from, as it always does, and instead of a true democratic platform, or democratic inspirational figure, immediately fabricating a new objective political reality out of its hopes and dreams. Maga is splitting into factions. The center, supposedly exemplified by “neoconservative” and “establishment” Shapiro – he’s not even remotely close – is collapsing under the weight of extremists like Carlson, Owens and Megyn Kelly. Harwell quotes one academic who concludes that “Ben Shapiro has become the avatar of a strand of conservatism that has taken him by the chin for years. And now they’re losing favor within the conservative movement, which is as much a problem for Donald Trump as it is for Ben Shapiro.”

In fact, the ice-defending, gay and trans-aggressive, militarily aggressive Shapiro is in the midst of the Maga movement, the vast majority of whom support Iran’s war, regardless of opposition. To the extent that Shapiro’s media company is losing ground to newcomers like Carlson and Owens, well, that’s called commercial competition.

American politics now exists in two dimensions: entertainment and the interplay of power vectors that is politics. Maga, as a movement built solely on emotion, believes it is political when she roars her approval of Trump in front of his Social Truth feed and at his rallies. But it is simply fulfilling its destiny as a movement configured by simmering rage and instant gratification through the release of rage. Maga thinks, or rather feels, that she has found the remedy for what she considers to be her political impotence in the figure of Trump. The opposite is true. The very worship of Trump is the institutionalization of his impotence.

The Trump is the roadside drain that catches runoff from a major rainstorm. The stream of water that continues to flow through the streets is still powered by the same Republican kingmakers who have run the GOP at least since the post-Nixon elites began the long process of integrating America’s radical right. Magas’ growing radicalization is no problem for Trump. It’s a way to keep them dependent on him. Whatever twists and turns radicalization may take – toward Israel, away from Israel, isolationist, interventionist – Maga has nowhere else to go.

It is not the natural swing of a media company struggling to survive in an entirely new media environment that makes Daily wire a bunch of political trends right now. It’s the nature of some right-wing attacks on her. Extremist figures like Owens and Nick Fuentes are advancing the mainstreaming dynamic of the radical right by openly insulting Shapiro with anti-Semitic slurs; at a recent landmark US convention, Shapiro was also the target of anti-Semitic attacks. Just as Shapiro’s Orthodox Jewish views on sexuality converge with those of the Christian right, anti-Semitic attacks on him from the right are reflecting an anti-Semitism that often lurks behind anti-Zionism on the left.

In a complete historical quirk, Netanyahu, the war criminal, has united, at least in this context, American political extremes. The difference is that Maga couldn’t find Israel, or Palestine, or Iran on a map. Their Jew-hatred is pure, home-grown and finally unstoppable. of Daily wire‘s decline, such as it is, does not represent a radical right falling apart. The very name “Shapiro” is helping to hold it together.
