Forward the ceremony beginshowever, the first competition of the evening actually unfolds long before the envelopes are opened.
The red carpet is where stars make their earliest statements, and for many, it’s a chance to win in style even if the night’s trophies go elsewhere.
Early hits this year included a bold performance from Best Actress nominee Renate Reinsve, as the Norwegian star went bold with a super-high leg split. In contrast, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You Rose Byrne wore a strapless black number, gathered at her feet and adorned with floral embroidery.
Raye, known as the artist everyone is rooting for to sing the next James Bond soundtrack, also spread some love by flashing a hand heart to complement her red satin dress, while Robert Downey Jr. and his producer wife, Susan, put on a loving display.
Soon, the main characters of the evening came out, with Hamnet, Jessie Buckley, who plays William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes, turning heads in a lively Chanel look.
The Irish film star, also known for her roles in Wicked Little Letters and I’m Thinking of Ending Things, shone in her colour-clashing ensemble, a flowy pink skirt on her bottom half and a red top, which she teamed with matching lipstick.
Other dazzling arrivals came from Sinners star and supporting actress nominee Wunmi Mosaku in emerald sequins as she proudly carried her baby bump. The Deadpool & Wolverine actress is expecting her second child with Tash Moseley.
Demi Moore also got the green memo, seemingly channeling the chic of the half-scale, half-feathered reptile and peacock with one of the oddest outfit choices of the night.
Her glittering gown was designed by Gucci and featured a dramatic train and neckline.
On the more modest side, Elle Fanning served up ballerina chic in a floral-embellished bodice, while Zoe Saldaña wore a black lingerie-inspired lace dress.
We also had the Bugonia Stone in sparkling silver, while Gunslinger villain Amy Madigan defied traditional red carpet glamor with her quirkiness, her feathered jacket paired with painted shades for a super cool lip.
As expected at major events in recent years, tonight also saw some attendees take the opportunity to make a political statement.
Hamnet-nominated Polish-American costume designer Malgosia Turzanska had an ‘ICE OUT’ pin on her dress, as did singer Sara Bareilles, while Glennon Doyle took a more straightforward approach, unashamedly carrying a ‘F**K ICE’ bag.
Their accessories made their red carpet debut amid ongoing outrage over the US government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and its aggressive tactics, including deadly force.
