West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 | 2,926 candidates in contention for votes


Kolkata: A total of 2,926 candidates remain in the fray for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections after the process of withdrawal of nominations is over, the Election Commission said on Tuesday.

According to an official press release issued by the voting panel, in the first phase, 1478 candidates will compete in 152 electoral units, while in the second phase, 1448 candidates will compete for 142 electoral units.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the second phase was April 9, with the review held on April 10 and withdrawals allowed until April 13.

A senior Election Commission official said that the voting machinery is now fully prepared for the next phase.

“With the final list of candidates ready, the returning officers will proceed with the notification of competing candidates in the official gazette as per the rules,” the official said. PTI.

The commission has also reiterated its transparency measures, allowing voters to access details of candidates, including their educational qualifications, criminal antecedents and assets, through the ECINet mobile app.

“In line with our efforts to improve voter awareness and access, the ballot units will display color photographs of the candidates along with their names and symbols in larger letters,” he added.

Voting for the two phases is scheduled for April 23 and 29, with authorities focusing on ensuring the smooth running of the election process across the state.
