It’s no secret that as a nation, we can’t get enough Marks & Spencer – especially when it comes to the food.
The retailer has become our buyer stunning piecespremium dinner offerings, and of course, lots and lots of sweet treats.
During the last years, a bread cakes has stood out among the rest, however, achieving cult status with buyers and occasionally selling out: cookies.
So popular have they proved that M&S has even declared itself ‘the home of the cookie’ on its website, adding: ‘From cute classic favorites to fully-filled cookie cups, we’ve got every cookie craving covered.’
New flavors are being added all the time – with the latest being White chocolate and raspberry, which was launched at Foodhalls on 8th April.
Everyone has their favorites and finding out which one is the best of the bunch is no mean feat… but the team at subway gave it a go and after a heated debate in the office, we came up with a ranking.
Here are the results…
1. Milk chocolate
Milk chocolate proved to be a crowd pleaser. Not a single soul in subway had a bad word to say about her, which is why she claimed our top spot.
Lifestyle journalist Charlie Sawyer declared it her ‘favourite’, saying: ‘They’re a luxury wardrobe staple for a reason and if you’re looking for an extra dose of sweetness, try dipping it into a cup of hot chocolate.’
Similarly, lifestyle reporter Eleanor Noyce admitted that milk chocolate was the ‘GOAT’.
And specialist food writer Courtney Pochin added: “It’s wonderfully soft and chewy, with generous chunks of chocolate and most importantly, the overall flavor isn’t too sweet.”
Her top tip is to get a bag of these WINEthen catch yourself a tub of ice cream and put them together to create a glorious ice cream sandwich.
2. Triple chocolate

Courtney wanted to put this at the bottom of the list, but the suggestion caused a stir, so it moved up.
The newsletter’s producer, Dylan Mangan, said: “I often find chocolate a bit rich for me – I much prefer jelly if I want to enjoy a dessert – but M&S have managed to create a biscuit that manages to have the most incredible chocolate flavor without ever becoming too rich.”
First person and opinion authoring editor Maicey Navarro Griffiths agreed it was the ‘best’ choice of M&S biscuits due to the ‘musty and chewy’ texture and ‘intense flavour’ that fails to impress.
“It’s like a brownie, and a cookie has had a miracle baby,” she adds.
3. Ginger and white chocolate cake
Since it was only available for a limited time in Christmassome would say this is a controversial pick for third place.
But lifestyle editor Kristina Beanland would disagree.
“I love the aggressive sweetness of the white chocolate and how it’s complemented by the spiced gingerbread. It’s just a match made in heaven,” she said.
The unsung hero of the cookies, however, are the salted caramel bits, which also add a touch of charm. I have been known to eat all five of the package in one sitting.
They might not have been around for long, but they made a big impression.
4. White chocolate
The white chocolate chip cookie version was hailed “simple yet stunning” by soap journalist Calli Kitson, and she wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
However, some Metro journalists thought the cookie was ‘too sweet’, which is why it missed out on a place in the top three.

I can’t choose just one…
5. Peppermint bark
It’s clear that we’re big fans of Christmas treats at Metro, like this festive taste also went up a storm with the team.
Sarah Hooper, Metro’s US news reporter, felt they were ‘very addictive’, revealing she always had a few on their desk last December.
“I bought more than a dozen packs over the holidays,” she confessed.
“The chocolate and minty freshness are so satisfying, they just don’t compare to any other biscuit M&S offers.”
Similarly, fellow news reporter Brooke Davies described them as ‘divine’.
6. Dotted eggs
This is going to get us some hate, as we know it’s a favorite of the general public. M&S shoppers were literally begging for her return.
At Metro, though, no one seemed particularly bothered by it, with barely anyone declaring it their overall favorite, meaning it slipped down the list.
Charlie and Eleanor both agreed that it ‘slaps’, but only if you warm it up before eating.
7. White chocolate and raspberry
As the newest flavor to be added to the range, most people haven’t had a chance to try this yet, which is the only reason it’s in last place right now. Give it a few weeks and we fully expect this to become a firm favourite.
Courtney tried it and said: “I’m not always a fan of this flavor combination as it’s sometimes too artificially sweet, but M&S has got the balance right with this one. The sweetness of the white chocolate is nicely offset by the refreshing zing of the freeze-dried raspberry pieces.
“It’s a little undercooked, and the texture is a little gritty, which I personally don’t like, but I can still see this flying off the shelves.”
Honorable Mention…
We cannot discuss M&S cookies without giving them a call Chocolate Button Bread.
These have their own special place, as they are a short cookie compared to a cookie, but they are absolutely delicious nonetheless.
Lifestyle journalist Eleanor Noyce said they would be her top choice if they were allowed in the official rankings.
“I like the crumbliness of the cookie versus the shape of the chocolate,” she said.
“I’m a big fan of M&S chocolate buttons in general, but I think there’s a big difference having them specifically on biscuits rather than just chocolate chips. It feels a bit more indulgent.’
