In a major security breach, a masked man drove an SUV into the Delhi Assembly premises on Monday afternoon and escaped after placing a bouquet outside the Speaker’s office. However, he was caught within hours, police said.
Then the police stopped two others and confiscated the vehicle.
The SUV entered the premises by forcing its way through one of the gates, where there was little security.
The driver was identified as Sarabjit, a resident of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.
The police raised a high alert after the incident, even as investigators and bomb disposal teams conducted intensive checks in the Parliament premises and neighboring areas.
The incident happened around 2 pm, when the vehicle with UP license plate entered the bar.
As soon as he entered the premises, officials said, the driver went towards Speaker Vijender Gupta’s office and placed a bouquet near the verandah and sped away. There was less security at the gate through which the driver entered, as the Assembly was not in session.
Authorities are treating the incident as a security breach, officials said, adding that it has raised “serious” concerns.
Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ravindra Yadav arrived at the spot soon after the incident, while investigators began checking CCTV footage and intensified efforts to nab the person behind the wheel.
Forensic teams have also examined the bouquet, which was kept near the Speaker’s office, while the bomb disposal team and the dog team, which carried out the checks, ruled out any threat of explosives.
