The apex court, taking suo motu notice, directed the Election Commission of India to entrust the investigation into the incident to either the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
“We direct the ECI to entrust the probe/investigation into yesterday’s incident to either the CBI or the NIA. The compliance report will be submitted to this court. The agency will be required to submit a preliminary investigation report directly to this court,” Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said during a hearing at the SIR in West Bengal, according to Bar and bench.
Terming the incident a brazen and deliberate attempt to obstruct the administration of justice, a bench headed by CJI Surya Kant noted with dismay that despite earlier warnings, state authorities failed to act immediately, leaving judicial officials without protection, food or water for hours.
The court has issued notices to senior state officials, including the Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police, for their inaction.
