Casting stories are charming
Both Glen Powell and Donald Glover basically tried. Speaking to Forbes Powell said that he called the production team after the first film to express his deep love for Fox McCloud and his dream to be part of a Star Fox project, completely unaware that the character was already being discussed for this very film.
Glover made a similar call, telling the team he would deliver “the most incredible Yoshi” if given the chance. Both got exactly what they asked for.
Why Super Mario Galaxy?
The choice to base the film on the Galaxy games was driven by the creative possibilities that space opens up. The first film was based in a fairly Earth-like setting, but Galaxy allows for gravity shifting, floating planetoids and a sense of cosmic wonder that translates beautifully to the big screen.
There is also an emotional thread from the first film in this film. A quiet moment in the movie Super Mario Bros., where Peach stares into space and admits she doesn’t know where she came from, became the foundation for this sequel.
The relationship between Peach and Rosalina is central to the story, an idea that Miyamoto and game director Yoshiaki Koizumi had discussed during the original development of the Super Mario Galaxy video game, but was never fully resolved until now.
Comments so far from critics
Reactions have been warm and cold. Critics agree that the film was not made to win awards, but to unite fans of all ages in a spirit of celebration, just like the first.

There are two bonus scenes worth waiting for. The first brings back Lumalee, the gloomy blue star creature that became a favorite in the first film. He’s now working as a prison guard for Bowser and Bowser Jr., and his outlook on life hasn’t improved one bit. It’s a really funny reward for fans of the character.
The second scene is more of a tease for the future. Princess Daisy, a Nintendo staple since her debut in the 1989 Game Boy title Super Mario Land, makes a cameo that strongly hints at more movies to come. She has no lines, but her presence alone was enough to get the audience talking.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now showing in cinemas across the UAE. It’s a great choice for families, a nostalgic treat for anyone who grew up with the games, and proof that the Nintendo and Illumination partnership has found a formula that really works.
