The series is based on two of French’s books, including In The Woods and its sequel, The Likeness.
Despite the title of the show, most of it was shot in Belfast and the surrounding areas of Northern Irelandas well as Dublin.
The woods where the murders take place were filmed in Tollymore Forest in Northern Ireland – a location that was also used for Game of Thrones and the film Dracula Untold.
For scenes set in the 1980s, the nearby village of Drumaness was used, with 80s-era Garda sledgehammers, green post boxes and ice cream vans appearing in the area during filming.
Speaking at the time of the programme’s release, show creator Sarah Phelps told the BBC she was ‘compelled’ by French’s novels.
Of the main characters, Phelps explained: ‘This case will undo the thing they have in common and in common, the pact they made with each other. I can’t say too much about it because it’s a huge spoiler, but there’s something deep and dark about what they share.
“It’s something tragic and very personal that has followed them all their adult lives. This story is about how they’re going to be able to get on with the serious, dirty business of living alone with him.’
Reflecting on her performance in the series, lead actress Sarah Greene described filming as ‘very tough’.
Speaking of Hot press in 2019, she added: ‘It gets under your skin. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m “method”, but it was dark in places.’
She went on to reveal how the series had hired a consultant to help her and Scott get into the hotbed detective space.
“When you see a body, you have to approach it for details, putting your emotions to one side. How do you tell a family that something has happened to a loved one?’
The Dublin Murders is available to stream now on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
