Nostalgic raid
I see the new Tomb Raider: Catalyst the game (not the remake) has been pushed to 2028, which is a bit of a bummer. However, I also notice that fewer people than I thought seem to care, and in general there isn’t much discussion of the two games online, even though I thought the trailers for both were pretty good.
Eight years have passed Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and not everyone likes this, or that whole trilogy in general. It wasn’t even a huge hit, or Square Enix wouldn’t sell it. I think the games were generally good, but not that great Tomb Raiderif that makes sense. So I think the series has lost a lot of fans over the years, and there are probably a lot of people who don’t think it ever had one the right one Tomb Raider for a long time now.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, but will the remake be enough to put the series back on the charts again? I hope so, but I have my doubts if the original Tomb Raider game has much appeal nowadays. That’s why the reboot trilogy turned it into a generic action adventure AND why has it lost its popularity? It is a difficult situation.

To be honest, the idea of ad-based streaming games sounds like it would be a huge deal for us and terrible for advertisers. As far as I understand, all you have to do is go take a nap for the first five minutes the ads appear and they don’t come back until you turn the game off. That sounds almost too good to be true to me.

Maybe they will try to run them by pressing the pause button, but who wants to play Witcheror some other medieval game, and suddenly you get an ad for Daz. It sounds terrible, but I think if you’re getting a £60 game for free in return, it might be worth it.

I don’t even think Nintendo would be crazy enough to pass up the opportunity to have one special edition Switch 2 for Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and/or the 40th anniversary gen. However, it will be very strange to see the big Nintendo Christmas the game is a 28 year old game that most of their younger fans have no idea about.
There’s still a chance of an unannounced game lurking in the shadows, but I don’t think there’s any chance of it being anything big. Maybe The Duskbloods will come out at the same time – sometime Halloween seems like a good idea – but still seems like an odd lineup to me.
It hasn’t been a great second year for the Switch 2, as the first was already a bit iffy. There is still a hope that there will be something good in the first half of next year, but when will they announce this?

Annual fee
140 quid for FIFAsorry EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Plus the edition is simply mind-blowing. Of course, people can spend their money on exactly what they want, and if someone is big on FUT, then it’s probably worth it in the long run. But damn, that’s a lot of money to spend right away on a video game, especially if you’re on a budget, like me.
Even the last few games have not been well received. It used to be a big deal every year when the two football games had to come out. Ever since PES morphed into eFootball, and with EA’s latest iterations receiving generally mixed reviews, I’ve kind of lost interest.
My personal favorites of recent times (Xbox One/PlayStation 4 era) are PES 2016, PES 2019 and FIFA 17. I still play these games quite regularly. They are cheap as chips in physics these days. One of the many reasons to have a single drive car.

Repeat play
I have started playing through Witcher 3 again, as I like a long open world game to play on the weekends. I forgot how dark this game can be with Bloody Barons and Crones. As with all these types of games, the side quests can be a little boring, but overall, I’m loving it again and Gwent is still the best thing ever.
However, the Ciri sections are absolutely terrible and I remember hating them when I first played through the game, but they look even worse now. I know it will be different for The Witcher 4, but hopefully they can fix the issues and it will be another great game.

Different worlds
That list of best selling remakes it was interesting because it shows again why companies make decisions that the big players think are wrong. The Last Of Us Part 1 might have seemed like a no-brainer to us, but it actually sold very well, so it was easy money for Sony and something a lot of people were prepared to pay for.
The most surprising thing for me was Dead Space. EA specifically said it was a failure and dumped the entire franchise on it and yet it sold over 4 million copies?! Did they expect it to outsell GTA or something? What could they have expected from a remake of a game that originally only sold 1 million copies?
So I guess the lesson is that sometimes companies make sane business decisions and sometimes they make crazy stupid decisions. Either way, what the average player wants, or thinks is a good idea, has nothing to do with it. Many times it seems that what we want and how we think things should be handled is the opposite of what actually happens.
I think this is just business. We want good games and they want maximum profits; these two goals do not go together easily.
FOCUSING
don’t say anything
So I see Sony has addressed that Termination of PSN in their usual style: saying absolutely nothing and leaving everyone wondering what’s going on. It’s really hard not to get the impression that Sony hates its customers and will do anything to avoid talking to them.
They act like some Victorian era toff who won’t talk to the lower orders. It’s a real shame that the Xbox is so useless because it’s so open to someone else getting in there and offering a real alternative to the PlayStation.

India July
I just checked out some new indie games on Steam, with Rubinite being a very promising demo of a very good looking action adventure game similar to Zelda: A Link To The Past. The premise is a dark fairy tale setting, taking control of a princess-type character trying to reclaim a fallen kingdom using a top-down perspective.
I feel like the exploration is there, but with more preference given to highly focused action, like a Soulsborne variation of some sort, which to me is the perfect blend of game art and mechanics for this day and age. Which brings me to another interesting gameplay style for a title called Dive Or Die: Children Of Rain.
I’ve always been a fan of Lovecraftian style games, and they’ve come in many forms with varying degrees of success. The setting is a rain-flooded apocalyptic world, with only mountaintop islands left and a wild deity to appease. The game requires you to dive into something called an abyssalpPool for a variety of survival reasons.
It could be like a cross between Subnautica or Dave The Diver and Cult Of The Lamb. But it’s the mysterious depth that fascinates me in this game, where your management of oxygen, health level and health is necessary as you explore the depths, avoiding creepy sea creatures. Additionally, you must land and improve your environment for survival, but at the cost of making some dark decisions that involve sacrificing the crew to the dark deity.
These two games are exactly why indie games are where all the weird, surreal, and scary scenarios should be, without the need to have the experience diluted by a lack of money and the need to have massive sales to survive. Just a good imagination and skill and ability to develop these into a successful game, without too much pressure. Of course, you also need the word of mouth to get your title out there in the world and have the income to create more titles later.

Does anyone think Microsoft might end up canceling Forza Horizon 6 for PlayStation 5? They haven’t mentioned it once since they went back to being exclusive, and the state of the wine was the obvious time. If they haven’t canceled it, this is the worst marketing campaign ever.

So what do we think the next Assassin’s Creed remake will be, now that we know Black Flag was a huge hit? I really hope it’s Assassin’s Creed 2.

GC: The only rumors have been about the first game, but who knows how the success of Black Flag might affect Ubisoft’s plans.
