A jury in Los Angeles on Wednesday found Meta and YouTube liable for harming a young woman through the addictive design of their social media platforms and ordered the companies to pay $3 million in damages.
The ruling delivered a landmark ruling that could reframe how the tech industry faces legal responsibility for the mental health of young users.
The plaintiff, known in court documents by her initials KGM and named Kaley in court, is the central figure in a case that could determine whether social media companies can be held legally responsible for harming children’s mental health.
