It feels like the attack of mosquitoes this year in Saskatchewan – it seems you can’t go outside without getting some.
The number of mosquitoes in Saskatchewan has increased significantly this year, with numbers increasing year-over-year and beating the 10-year average.
In Saskatoon traps last week averaged 168. That compares to five mosquitoes per trap last year at this time.

Regina has 12 traps across the city with an average of 200 last week. Last year it was 10 on average.
Just outside Regina in rural areas, there were over 400 compared to just eight in 2025.
Shops have also seen growth, with mosquito spray sold in many places.

Some retailers have even placed a limit on how many bottles a person can buy.
City of Saskatoon entomologist Georgiana Antochi-Crihan says the rain and hot weather make the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
And while that’s a big increase, it can be felt more because of the drought years.
“The 10-year average that I reported, 12 mosquitoes on average per trap,” Antochi-Crihan said, “which is, you know, 10 years of drought, so they’re definitely feeling bad right now, but a lot of them could also just be because we’re not used to seeing so many mosquitoes.”
She says the city has tried to help keep them away.
“Our teams will go out after any significant rain event to see if there is mosquito activity and if they meet that threshold, they will apply a product known as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis,” she said. “It’s a mosquito-killing bacterium that only affects mosquitoes and closely related allies.”
People are asked to clean up or cover water that collects on their property such as birdbaths, rain barrels, drip trays under flowerpots, even water left on parts of tarps, and trim grass to minimize numbers.
