New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday accused the Delhi Police of using excessive force against protesters during its ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, alleging that several students were injured and Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali J Angmo was pushed as the outfit continued its protest with a sit-in on the police stage near Kerala House.
The police, however, dismissed the claim that Angmo was attacked as “completely false and fraudulent”. They claimed that “no individual was subjected to a targeted attack”.
The charges came after police dispersed protesters trying to march towards Parliament and cleared the protest site. By evening, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Angmo continued the protest near Kerala House, saying the agitation would continue despite the crackdown.
“The police have been absolutely brutal. They have broken the skulls of many students who were protesting here. Even a 15-year-old girl was brutally beaten by a male policeman. A police officer even tried to grab the hair of Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo. They even tried to get away from her and tried to wash her.”
Addressing supporters, Angmo said the movement has attracted the support of about 25 million young people, which she said reflects widespread concern about the state of the country’s education system.
“This shows that our education system, education policies and general governance in this sector are deeply flawed and affect every young person. The government should listen to their concerns as soon as possible. Good governance means listening to the voice of young people and solving this issue without delay,” she said.
Angmo said Wangchuk, who continues his hunger strike at Safdarjung Hospital, has set three conditions for ending his fast: the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, an assurance from cabinet ministers and members of Parliament that education-related issues will be addressed during the ongoing Monsoon session, and action by the government on a protest by the government. alleged leakage of NEET paper in state of government schools.
“Only if these assurances are given, Sonam will end his fast,” Angmo said.
The Delhi Police, however, denied claims that Angmo was assaulted.
In a post on X, the force said reports claiming Angmo had been assaulted or had her hair pulled by police personnel were “completely false and misleading”.
“No individual was subjected to a targeted attack and claims suggesting malicious force or personal targeting are completely unfounded,” he said.
The CJP said her protest will continue despite the police action, with Dipke, Ranka, Das and Angmo continuing their protest near Kerala House after leaving Jantar Mantar. “This peaceful protest is not over,” the clothing says.
