UPI ticketing glitch fixed, refunds on the way, says BMTC

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) on Thursday said a temporary toll gate outage on the evening of July 15 affected the generation of UPI QR code-based bus tickets, resulting in some passengers being charged without getting a ticket.

According to the Corporation, the technical problem disrupted the payment gateway server, causing charges to be debited from passengers’ bank accounts in some cases, while the corresponding tickets could not be generated or printed.

BMTC said the glitch was rectified on the night of July 15 and the UPI QR code ticketing system has since been restored. Passengers whose accounts have been debited but have not received a ticket will be automatically refunded, he added.

BMTC introduced UPI-based ticket payments in 2023 and introduced QR code-based ticketing through new electronic ticketing machines at all its 50 depots in February this year. Around 53% of its daily ticket revenue is now collected through UPI payments.
